Naveen S Garewal Editor-in-Chief

When I took on the role of Editor-in-Chief of News Arena India in August 2023, I was given a clear mandate to create a platform for fair, accurate, and balanced journalism. The media landscape was already crowded, competitive, and rapidly evolving.

www.newsarenaindia.com was launched, accompanied by an ePaper, to document events with honesty and integrity and create a reliable record of history as it unfolded. Over the next three years, through the combined efforts of a dedicated editorial team and the support of management under The Ideaz Factory consortium, we kept a close tab on the pulse of the nation and the world beyond.

The mandate, as articulated at the very outset, was clear: honest journalism free from the mouthpiece role of any political party or ideology. We strove to present multiple perspectives, verify rigorously, and refuse to join the rat race or succumb to the temptation to sacrifice accuracy for speed. From a pan-India network of finest journalists, we reported on national affairs, state politics, international developments, the economy, sport, and culture, while building a presence that reached hundreds of thousands through the website, social media platforms, mailing lists, and distribution channels such as Dailyhunt.

Significant events that we covered formed the backbone of our archive, chief among them the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—a defining national moment and the largest democratic exercise in the world, culminating in a third term for the National Democratic Alliance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, though it was a coalition government after the BJP fell short of a solo majority. We closely monitored the seven-phase polling and shadowed politicians from the INDIA bloc till the people's mandate returned the incumbents to power.

From year to year, we focused on special events for our readers: the highly anticipated Union Budget of 2024, the Paris Olympics that celebrated the performance of Indian athletes and the broader spirit of the Games, and diplomatic milestones—Quad engagements, India–US critical minerals and trade discussions, ties with Africa and Russia, and evolving neighbourhood dynamics. Economic stories ranged from major investments (Amazon's multi-billion-dollar commitments and job-creation pledges, and Apple's retail expansion) to infrastructure projects such as BRO works in Ladakh and industrial corridors in states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.

We also recorded the quieter yet consequential: state assembly and by-election contests, natural disasters and earthquakes, cultural recognitions such as Deepavali's inclusion on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List, sporting achievements in hockey and cricket, scams and enforcement actions, and human-interest narratives that reminded readers of resilience and ingenuity. The ePaper and website together sought to freeze these moments in a structured, accessible format, serving both immediate readers and future chroniclers. Defence issues, covered by experts on the subject in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor, catapulted News Arena India into a publication taken seriously in defence and policy circles.

The journey was never smooth. The ups were real. Building a multi-category news operation from a startup footing, growing an engaged audience on X (where @NewsArenaIndia amassed a substantial following through timely video and political coverage), and earning a reputation for balanced reporting under the leadership of an experienced editorial team won us accolades. Targeted and relevant coverage of defence and policy issues, elections, budgets, and international developments let us punch above our weight. Feedback from discerning readers helped us sharpen our approach and produce crisp, accurate content that offered substance amid the noise.

The downs and challenges proved much harder to cope with. Consumption habits were slowly shifting towards brief and capsule journalism. The move to short-form video, algorithmic social feeds and instant mobile updates was clear. Long-form or even structured digital editions struggled against the dopamine of endless scrolls on mobile and tablets screens.

Independent digital news startups faced structural headwinds. Quality journalism costs money—reporters, verification, legal protection, technology—and advertising revenue was limited in a space dominated by large platforms and free content. It was not easy to turn readers into sustainable subscribers. Financial sustainability of the business model, under such circumstances, became increasingly precarious. Competition from legacy media's digital arms, pure-play video platforms, and aggregator apps intensified. Maintaining editorial independence while tightly navigating the commercial realities tested our resolve daily, and the demanding technical and operational needs of running a website and ePaper—constant updates, mobile optimisation, and multi-platform distribution—added further strain upon a lean team.

The achievements, measured not only in traffic or followers but also in the archive itself, remain. Without bending to partisan narratives, we documented three transformative years of Indian democracy, diplomacy, the economy, and society. Our readers were exposed to diverse viewpoints that prioritised facts. The ePaper, distributed through channels that reached readers across languages and regions, offered a deliberate counterpoint to ephemeral feeds: a curated, edition-like record. Cartoons, photo galleries, interviews, and opinion pieces added texture. In an era of information overload and declining trust in media, our insistence on verification and balance remained our statement.

Now, after three years, the management has had to take the tough call to close both the website and the ePaper. The decision reflects hard realities—changing consumption patterns and the limits of financial viability for this particular model—rather than any failure of journalistic intent. It is a sober recognition that the economics of serious digital news remain unforgiving for small and independent ventures. However, the archive of stories we published stands as a modest contribution to the public records.

As we wind down, we owe gratitude to our readers and subscribers, whose engagement kept the spirit and energy of our reporters, editors, designers, and technical staff high. The management, which had faith in us, offered constant encouragement throughout.

This is not the end of a journalistic commitment. It will continue in some form or another, and we remain committed to keeping the flow of unbiased and unfiltered information. Technology will evolve. Audience habits will change. But the search for accurate, independent accounts of events will not die. For now, News Arena India steps back. The website and ePaper close, but the work of observing, verifying, and narrating continues elsewhere.

Thank you for reading with us these three years.

Until the next venture—goodbye, and stay informed.
