A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on Saturday evening, sending strong tremors across Delhi-NCR and surrounding areas.

A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan's Hindu Kush region on Saturday evening, sending tremors across large parts of north India, including Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Chandigarh, and several areas of Punjab and Haryana.

According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 215 km, with its epicentre in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck about 43 km south of Jurm in northeastern Afghanistan.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in Afghanistan or India.

The tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR, prompting many residents to step out of homes and offices as a precaution. Similar jolts were reported from Srinagar and other parts of Jammu and Kashmir, while residents in Chandigarh and nearby districts of Punjab and Haryana also experienced the shaking.

Social media was flooded with posts from people reporting tremors across northern India. Reports also emerged from neighbouring Pakistan, where the earthquake was felt in Lahore, Faisalabad, Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Emergency services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa said district administrations were placed on alert. Anwar Shahzad, a spokesman for the Provincial Disaster Management Authority, said that initial assessments had found no reports of casualties or damage.

A resident of Pakistan's Swat district told the media that the tremors were strong and lasted for several seconds, triggering panic among residents.

"It was very huge here in Swat, and it lasted for quite a long time. People came out of their houses, and women and children were seen crying in panic," the resident said.

Authorities are monitoring the situation, but no significant damage has been reported so far.
