A person was killed, and a BSF jawan was injured on Friday when the Border Security Force (BSF) stopped a smuggling attempt along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal, officials said.

The incident happened early in the morning near Khalpara village in Darjeeling district.

According to a BSF spokesperson, 15-20 Bangladeshi intruders illegally crossed the border and entered deep into Indian territory. They were joined by people from the Indian side to smuggle cattle and other illegal goods.

When the BSF patrol team asked them to surrender, the intruders attacked with sickle-like weapons, sticks, and stones. In response, the BSF fired non-lethal ammunition to disperse them, but they continued their assault and even tried to snatch a soldier’s weapon.

Fearing for his life, a BSF jawan fired from his rifle, causing the attackers to flee.

During the clash, one BSF soldier was seriously injured, and the body of an unidentified person was found at the scene. Officials also discovered that the border fence had been breached by Bangladeshi smugglers.

The BSF seized two cattle that the smugglers were attempting to transport illegally. The identity and nationality of the deceased person are yet to be confirmed.
