Shehzad Poonawalla, who recently tendered his resignation as a national spokesperson for the BJP, has resubmitted his request to the party leadership, urging them to accept his decision and relieve him of all organisational duties. In a letter addressed to BJP president Nitin Nabin, which he subsequently published on X, Poonawalla expressed gratitude that the party had initially turned down his exit and requested him to reconsider. However, following period of thorough reflection, he stated that he had reached a final conclusion to step down from both his official role and active party membership.
Hinting at internal friction without identifying specific colleagues, Poonawalla noted that recent events involving certain individuals had forced him to stand by his original choice. Having joined the BJP in late 2021, the 38-year-old lawyer-turned-politician quickly grew into one of the party’s most recognisable media representatives and prominent Muslim figures, frequently leading press briefings and appearing in high-profile television debates. He had also previously been assigned to manage the BJP’s Delhi IT and social media division.
Elaborating on his departure, Poonawalla cited pressing personal and financial circumstances that necessitate a move to the private sector. Nevertheless, he clarified that stepping away from the organisational setup does not reflect a breach in his personal or political loyalties, emphasising that he remains committed to supporting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party's ideological vision whenever possible. He voiced deep appreciation for the opportunities granted to him over the past five years, singling out senior leaders including Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and General Secretary BL Santosh for their support.
Poonawalla, who first entered public life with the Congress party before breaking ranks over internal leadership elections, reflected on his tenure by highlighting how remarkable it was for a non-dynastic, Pasmanda Muslim background to find such a platform. Having submitted his renewed request, he is now awaiting the party’s formal approval to step down.
