Interviewer: Sharmistha, your book has certainly stirred conversations and reactions. Can you delve into the reasons behind your decision to write this book, especially given the intense responses it has garnered?

Sharmistha Mukherjee: Absolutely. The motivation behind writing this book was primarily to pay homage to my father, Pranab Mukherjee, and to document his intricate political journey. His life was a tapestry of experiences, and I felt compelled to share those with a wider audience. The responses, though intense, underline the significance of his impact on the political landscape.

Interviewer: The lack of response from the Gandhi family has been notable. Why do you think there has been this silence, and have you received any feedback from other senior Congress leaders?

Sharmistha : It's an interesting dynamic. While the Gandhi family's silence might indicate a cautious approach, I did come across Prithviraj Chavan Ji's statement advising a thorough reading of the book before forming opinions. As for other Congress leaders, it's been relatively quiet, but I'm hopeful that a more comprehensive dialogue will unfold.

Interviewer: The unexpected attention on the video accompanying the book release has added another layer of controversy. What are your thoughts on how this unfolded?

Sharmistha : Frankly, I wasn't anticipating such widespread attention. Controversy is inevitable when you're dealing with a figure like my father, who has been deeply entrenched in politics for decades. The video's impact, albeit unplanned, has sparked conversations, and that, in essence, is what my father would have appreciated – open dialogue.

Interviewer: Your book touches upon your father's close association with Indira Gandhi. Can you share more insights into their relationship and its impact on his political journey?

Sharmistha : Indira Ji played a pivotal role in shaping my father's political outlook. He considered her a mentor, attributing his political success to her guidance. Their relationship went beyond politics; she even influenced his sartorial choices, highlighting the personal connection they shared.

Interviewer: The Emergency period is a contentious chapter in Indian history. Your father's perspective on its positive aspects has raised eyebrows. Can you elaborate on his insights into that period?

Sharmistha : My father acknowledged that the Emergency had both positive and negative aspects. He argued that some stringent measures taken during that time had a positive impact on the economic front. However, he was also critical of the darker sides of the Emergency, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding.

Interviewer: The decision of your father to attend an RSS event drew criticism. How did he justify this, and what were the repercussions within Congress?

Sharmistha : His decision to attend the RSS event was rooted in his belief in the importance of dialogue in a democracy. Despite opposition, he defended his choice, emphasizing that engaging with diverse ideologies, even those he disagreed with, was vital for democratic principles.

Interviewer: Your father had a notable relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Can you share more about the nature of their interaction and the respect they held for each other?

Sharmistha : Their relationship was characterized by mutual respect and understanding. My father was clear about his constitutional role, assuring the Prime Minister that he would not interfere in governance matters but was open to providing advice on constitutional issues.

Interviewer: In closing, could you share a poignant piece of advice your father gave you that continues to resonate with you?

Sharmistha : Certainly. One enduring piece of advice from his diary that I hold dear is about the \"ability to absorb disappointment.\" It serves as a constant reminder during challenging times that resilience and perspective are crucial in navigating life's complexities.

Interviewer: Thank you for sharing these insightful reflections. Any final words for our audience?

Sharmistha Mukherjee: I encourage everyone to explore the book, as it offers a unique perspective on current politics and significant historical events through the lens of my father's remarkable political journey. Thank you for having me.
