Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, paid homage to the millions who suffered during the 1947 partition, acknowledging the immense pain and loss of life that occurred. 

 

Shah emphasized the importance of remembering history, stating that a nation that does so can build its future and emerge as a powerful country. 

 

The partition, which resulted in the creation of Pakistan, led to widespread rioting, displacement, and loss of life, with millions affected. 

 

Observing Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, initiated by the Modi government in 2021, is seen as a crucial step in nation-building, honoring the struggles and sacrifices of those who suffered. 

 

"On Partition Horrors Remembrance Day my homage to the millions who suffered inhumane pains, lost lives, turned homeless during this most hideous episode of our history. Only a nation that remembers its history can build its future and emerge as a powerful entity. Observing this day is a foundational exercise in the process of nation building under the leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi," cited Shah in a post on X. 

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the day to commemorate the pain and sacrifices of people during the partition, acknowledging that the wounds of that era can never be forgotten. 

 

India is set to celebrate its Independence Day on Thursday, a poignant reminder of the country's complex history and its journey towards freedom.
