Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged states to resolve inter-state water disputes through cooperation, timely clearances and technology-based monitoring, while reviewing key infrastructure and social sector projects worth over Rs 30,000 crore under the PRAGATI platform.

Chairing the 51st meeting of PRAGATI on Wednesday evening, Modi reviewed seven major infrastructure projects spanning railways, roads and power sectors across nine states.

According to an official statement, the Prime Minister said the Ken-Betwa river-linking project should serve as a model for resolving inter-state water issues through collaborative and mission-mode execution.

He encouraged states to identify similar opportunities involving river-linking, water conservation, groundwater recharge and efficient irrigation to strengthen long-term water security.

“During yesterday’s PRAGATI session, projects worth over Rs 30,000 crore were reviewed. The works covered sectors like railways, power and road connectivity,” Modi said in a post on X on Thursday.

The Prime Minister also reviewed implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 and stressed the need for effective execution beyond mere infrastructure creation.

He asked states to expedite construction of solid waste management facilities, including waste processing and GOBARdhan plants, while emphasising regular monitoring and citizen participation.

While reviewing power sector projects, Modi called for accelerated adoption of rooftop solar systems in cities, residential clusters and public institutions. He said rooftop solar initiatives should be implemented in mission mode to reduce electricity costs and strengthen clean energy generation.

The Prime Minister also suggested innovative use of canal networks, including installation of solar panels over canals and along canal infrastructure to optimise land use and reduce evaporation losses.

During discussions on road and port connectivity projects, Modi said the proposed Vadhavan Port should be developed as a model of integrated multi-modal connectivity linking coastal shipping, inland waterways, railways, highways and airports.

He stressed that delays in implementation of public projects not only escalate costs but also deprive citizens of timely access to essential services and infrastructure.

PRAGATI, an ICT-enabled governance platform, was launched to improve coordination between the Centre and states and ensure faster implementation of infrastructure and welfare projects.

At the meeting, Cabinet Secretary TV Somanathan said monthly reviews of social sector schemes at the state level had also been operationalised following directions from the Prime Minister.
