Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi of indulging in "gimmicks" when the nation was suffering from an economic crisis. This happened after the release of a video clip in which the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was seen receiving a pack of Melody toffees from Modi.
Addressing an event in Raebareli, the former Congress president took to X to criticise the PM Modi. He pointed out that while Indian farmers, labourers, and traders are struggling through difficult times, the Prime Minister is busy making videos for social media, with Bharatiya Janata Party supporters celebrating the moments regardless of the domestic reality.
In the video shared on social media, the Italian Prime Minister introduced Modi and highlighted the light-hearted gesture, noting that he had brought a very good toffee as a gift. Modi then held up the packet and smiled, saying "Melody," to which Meloni replied with her thanks.
In response to this diplomatic correspondence, Gandhi argued that the head of state to be distributing sweets in foreign countries while a financial tempest brews at home.
