Visit to West Bengal
Modi will also visit Kolkata on March 14, where he will inaugurate and lay foundation stones for development projects worth around Rs 18,680 crore.
The initiatives include several national highway projects spanning more than 420 km, worth about Rs 16,990 crore. These projects are aimed at strengthening road infrastructure, improving regional connectivity and reducing travel time across parts of eastern India.
Sections of National Highway-19 in West Bengal and Jharkhand, along with a stretch of National Highway-114 in West Bengal, will be among the road projects inaugurated during the visit.
The government said these initiatives are expected to improve road safety, ease congestion and pollution, promote tourism and support economic growth in the region.
A key component of the road infrastructure plan is the economic corridor between Kharagpur and Siliguri, which will pass through several districts of West Bengal, including Paschim Medinipur, Birbhum, Bankura, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly and Murshidabad.
The corridor will provide direct connectivity between Kharagpur and Morgram, reducing travel distance by about 120 kilometres and saving seven to eight hours of travel time.
Shipping and rail projects
The prime minister will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several port and shipping projects, including the mechanisation of berth number two at the Haldia Dock Complex.
The project is expected to improve cargo handling efficiency, enhance rail loading systems and increase safety while generating employment.
He will also inaugurate a rejuvenation project at the Khidderpore Docks and other infrastructure works related to dockyard facilities and riverfront protection along the Hooghly.
In the rail sector, Modi will flag off the Purulia-Anand Vihar Terminal Express and inaugurate six redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Station Scheme.
Additionally, two railway projects, the 16-km third rail line between Belda and Dantan and an automatic block signalling system between Kalaikunda and Kanimohuli, will also be dedicated to the nation.
Officials said these projects are expected to improve railway safety, reduce congestion and enhance travel convenience for passengers in the region.
