Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for a railway link connecting Assam’s Kokrajhar with Bhutan on March 13, marking what officials describe as a significant strategic and developmental step for the Northeast.

The programme will be held at Greenfield ground in Kokrajhar, where preparations are under way for the Prime Minister’s visit. The proposed rail corridor is expected to strengthen cross-border connectivity, expand economic engagement with Bhutan, and open fresh growth avenues for Assam and the wider region.

Senior state and regional leaders inspected the venue on Monday to review arrangements.

Assam Cabinet Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota and Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Chief Hagrama Mohilary visited the Greenfield site to oversee security, logistics, stage construction and crowd management plans.

A high-level coordination meeting was convened at the BTC Secretariat, where officials from multiple departments discussed security protocols, traffic regulation, public mobilisation and administrative coordination. Authorities expect a large turnout and are working to ensure smooth movement in and around Kokrajhar town.

Strategic and economic push

Beyond the Bhutan rail link, Modi is also scheduled to inaugurate several development initiatives during his visit, underscoring the Centre’s continued push for infrastructure expansion in the Northeast.

The rail project is expected to enhance trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges between India and Bhutan. Strategically, it reinforces New Delhi’s efforts to improve connectivity in border regions and integrate the Northeast more closely with neighbouring countries.

For the Bodoland Territorial Region, the project is being viewed as a potential catalyst for infrastructure-led growth, employment generation and greater economic integration. If completed on schedule, the Kokrajhar-Bhutan rail corridor could position the region as a key gateway for cross-border commerce.
