Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday became the longest-serving head of a government in India, completing 8,931 days in public office as Chief Minister and Prime Minister, with senior Union ministers hailing the milestone as a reflection of his 'nation-first' governance and decades of service.

The milestone places PM Modi ahead of former Sikkim CM, Pawan Kumar Chamling, who previously held the record for the longest tenure as the head of a government in the country.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh described the achievement as a reflection of 'pure devotion to the nation and its people', noting that Modi’s public life has been a continuous journey of service.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi is now the longest-serving head of a government in India. Pure devotion to the nation and its people defines PM Modi ji,” Singh said. He added that the 8,931 days in office reflected 'nation-first governance, integrity in action, and tireless service to every citizen'.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said PM Modi’s decades of 'seva' had shaped a distinct era in Indian politics.

“Whether it is giving the poor their rights, setting new landmarks in development or enhancing the nation's pride on global platforms, the PM Modi era has transformed India unrecognisably,” Shah said.

He added that serving the nation continuously for more than 24 years reflected the Prime Minister’s commitment, and said this explained the 'unprecedented affection' he has received from the people, having been elected three times as Gujarat chief minister and three times as Prime Minister.

Health Minister JP Nadda said PM Modi’s years in office reflected a sustained focus on people-centric governance and the goal of building a developed India.

“Under his leadership, India is moving towards the vision of 'Viksit Bharat', driven by people-centric policies that have empowered the poor, youth, women and farmers,” Nadda said, adding that India today stands more confident and influential globally.

BJP president Nitin Nabin credited PM Modi’s tenure with rapid progress in infrastructure, the digital sector and welfare schemes, and said successive electoral mandates in 2014, 2019 and 2024 reflected public trust in his leadership.

Union ministers Piyush Goyal, Ashwini Vaishnaw and Kiren Rijiju also hailed the milestone, describing it as a testament to 'inclusive development', 'dedication' and 'nation-first governance'.

Goyal said PM Modi’s 8,931 days in public life reflected an 'unwavering commitment to inclusive development', rooted in hard work and resolve, while Rijiju termed it a 'truly remarkable milestone' reflecting 'tireless dedication, integrity and nation-first governance'.

PM Modi served as Gujarat chief minister from October 2001 to May 2014, before being sworn in as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014. He has since then led the government through three consecutive Lok Sabha victories and continues to remain in office.
