Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke with Chief Justice of India BR Gavai to condemn a shocking attack on him that occurred earlier that day within the Supreme Court premises.

In a post on X, Modi expressed outrage over the incident, stating, “Spoke to Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai Ji. The attack on him earlier today in the Supreme Court premises has angered every Indian. There is no place for such reprehensible acts in our society. It is utterly condemnable.”

The incident involved an elderly lawyer, identified as Rakesh Kishore, who disrupted court proceedings by throwing a shoe toward Chief Justice Gavai during a session. The shoe did not reach the bench, and security personnel promptly apprehended Kishore, escorting him out of the courtroom.

Eyewitnesses reported that as he was being removed, Kishore shouted, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (will not tolerate insults to Sanatan Dharma).

Chief Justice Gavai, who was presiding alongside Justice K Vinod Chandran, remained composed throughout the incident. He instructed court officials to stay focused, saying, “Don't get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me,” and continued with the proceedings without interruption.

Prime Minister Modi praised Gavai’s calm demeanour, noting, “It highlights his commitment to the values of justice and strengthening the spirit of our Constitution.”

Following the incident, the Delhi Police detained Kishore for three hours inside the Supreme Court for questioning. However, as no formal complaint was lodged against him, he was released with a warning at the direction of Chief Justice Gavai, and his shoes were returned to him.

In response to the breach of decorum, the Bar Council of India (BCI) took swift action, ordering the immediate suspension of Rakesh Kishore on the same day. The BCI stated that his actions were “inconsistent with the dignity of the court.”

In its official statement, the BCI detailed, “On the basis of prima facie material, it appears that at about 11.35 am on 6 October 2025, in Court No. 1 of the Supreme Court of India, you i.e. Advocate Rakesh Kishore, enrolled with the Bar Council of Delhi vide enrolment nos..., removed your sports shoes and attempted to hurl them towards the Hon'ble Chief Justice of India during ongoing proceedings, whereupon you were detained by security.”

The repetition of this statement in the BCI’s order underscores the gravity of the incident and the council’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the judicial process.

The unprecedented attack and the subsequent response from the Prime Minister and the BCI highlight the seriousness with which such acts are viewed, reinforcing the need to maintain decorum and respect within India’s judicial institutions.
