The Philippines' Ambassador to the United States, Jose Manuel Del Gallego Romualdez, in his recent statement this week, called India one of the Philippines ‘close friends and partners, while highlighting the BrahMos deal between the two. As per the reports, the Philippines is likely to increase its previous order for the cruise missile from India, for which the discussions are underway between the two nations.
The decision was influenced by the growing conflict and friction at sea in the South China Sea, the media reports add.
A few days back, Philippine Marine Corps unveiled its BrahMoS Missile Battery.
In 2022, the Philippines signed a P18.9 billion (US $375 million) deal with India's BrahMos Aerospace to acquire three missile batteries. The first delivery was made by India on April 19, 2024.
The missiles being exported hold a target-hitting range of up to 290 km.
Meanwhile, the President of the Philippines, Bongbong Marcos, paid a visit to India this year in August, bolstering diplomatic ties between the nations.
