India has adequate coal supplies and stable power generation, the government said on Wednesday, dismissing concerns of any shortage amid rising demand.

Sanjeev Kumar Kassi, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, said sufficient coal stocks are available across mines, power plants, ports and in transit, ensuring quick supply to consumers.

“We have sufficient coal stocks available in the country at mines, power plants, ports and transit, which can be made available to the consumers at very short notice,” he said.

Kassi added that there is no deficit in power generation, noting that coal production is keeping pace with consumption. “We have absolutely no deficit on the power generation side. We are producing coal at a pace matching the consumption levels. There is no deficit,” he said.

The reassurance comes days after the ministry reported a milestone in coal output, with production and dispatches from captive and commercial mining crossing 200 million tonnes in the financial year 2025-26.

Coal production from captive and commercial mines stood at 210.46 million tonnes, registering a 10 per cent year-on-year growth from 190.95 million tonnes in the previous year. Dispatches rose 7.35 per cent to 204.61 million tonnes, compared to 190.42 million tonnes a year earlier.

The ministry described the achievement as a “watershed moment” for India’s coal sector, reflecting improved operational efficiency, stronger logistics, and enhanced capacity to meet growing energy demand.

Officials said the operationalisation of 12 captive and commercial coal blocks during the year added over 86 million tonnes of annual production capacity, significantly expanding the mining base.

Additionally, seven coal blocks began production within the same financial year, indicating faster execution and improved regulatory coordination.

The latest figures mark a sharp rise from FY 2022–23, when coal production from captive and commercial mining stood at 115.78 million tonnes and dispatches at 109.08 million tonnes.

The government has been pushing to boost domestic coal output to reduce import dependence and ensure reliable power supply, especially during peak demand periods.
