In a major breakthrough, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) detained one person on Thursday in the March 2023 case involving the violent attack on India's High Commission in London.
Inderpal Singh Gaba, a resident of Hounslow in the United Kingdom, was detained in Delhi on March 22, 2023. He was accused of engaging in illegal activity during the demonstrations.
"So far, NIA investigations into the case have revealed that the occurrences in London on March 19 and 22 of last year were part of a bigger plan to launch brutal assaults on Indian embassies and personnel.
The strikes in London in March 2023 were found to be in retaliation for the action conducted by the Punjab police against pro-Khalistani separatist Amritpal Singh on March 18, 2023," the agency said.
In August of last year, the NIA searched various places associated with the people suspected of being engaged in the March 19 attack on the High Commission in London.
The High Commission was attacked by a group of about 50 people who were accused of committing criminal trespass, causing disrespect to India’s national flag, damaging public property, and causing injuries to the High Commission officials.
The attack was planned by Gurcharan Singh of the Dal Khalsa in the United Kingdom, Avtar Singh Khanda of the Khalistan Liberation Force (who died on June 15, 2023, at City Hospital, Birmingham), Jasvir Singh, and their associates, both Indian and foreign citizens, as the agency previously stated.
In May last year, the NIA team was also dispatched to the United Kingdom to gather evidence. A "crowdsourcing of information" was then conducted to identify and collect information on the U.K.-based syndicates and individuals in the purported conspiracy.
