The Budget session’s second phase saw key financial legislation pass in Lok Sabha on Friday despite opposition protests over LPG shortages and price hikes.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced and got passed the Appropriation Bill, 2026, authorising withdrawals from the Consolidated Fund for 2025-26, by voice vote. The House also approved the Supplementary Demands for Grants (Second Batch) after debate. Sitharaman announced a ₹1-lakh-crore Economic Stabilisation Fund to cushion against global uncertainties while defending allocations for fertilisers, food subsidy, defence and ex-servicemen schemes.
Opposition targets LPG crisis
Proceedings were adjourned twice after opposition members demanded urgent discussion on LPG shortages linked to West Asia tensions. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured adequate supplies of cooking gas, petrol and diesel through diversified sourcing. Opposition also submitted notices in both Houses seeking removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged partisan conduct.
In the Upper House, members raised LPG import concerns, handloom sector challenges and rural road quality under PMGSY. Private members’ bills on MSP, mob lynching and transgender rights were introduced.
Both Houses adjourned for the weekend. The day highlighted the government’s focus on completing fiscal business amid opposition pressure on immediate livelihood issues.
