Political leaders from across parties on Wednesday expressed grief over the loss of lives in a stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.
The stampede occurred in the Sangam area early Wednesday as crores of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, resulting in multiple casualties.
Several people were killed, and many others were injured in the incident, which took place between 1 am and 2 am when some devotees attempted to climb over the barricades at Akhara Marg.
President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow over the stampede and prayed for the recovery of those injured.
"The stampede incident at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. I express my condolences to the families of the injured devotees and pray to God that all the injured devotees recover soon," Murmu said in a post on 'X' in Hindi.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday expressed grief at the stampede at Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
"I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took place at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh. I express my condolences to the bereaved families of the devotees who lost their loved ones in the accident," he said in a post on X.
प्रयागराज महाकुंभ में हुए दुखद हादसे से अत्यंत व्यथित हूँ। हादसे में अपने परिजनों को खोने वाले श्रद्धालुओं के शोकाकुल परिवारों के प्रति मैं अपनी संवेदना प्रकट करता हूँ और घायलों के शीघ्र स्वस्थ होने की कामना करता हूं।

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, in a post on X in Hindi, said, "The news of many devotees losing their lives and many getting injured in the stampede at the Sangam banks of Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya is very sad and unfortunate." "I pay my tribute to the devotees who lost their lives in this accident and express my deepest condolences to their families," Hooda said while wishing speedy recovery of the injured.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu also expressed grief over the stampede incident. CM Sukhu prayed to the Almighty to give peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved family members to bear this irreparable loss.

Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha condoled the loss of lives in the incident. Sinha shared his grief in a post on X, also praying for speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.
“The accident that happened at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely unfortunate and tragic. I express my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wish for the speedy recovery of the injured,” the LG said in his post in Hindi.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed grief over the loss of lives during stampede and urged all Kannadigas at the Mela to stay cautious and safe amid reports about injury to some devotees from the state.

Multiple people were killed and many injured in a stampede at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj in UP early Wednesday as crores of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. He assured that the state government will ensure safe return of devotees from Karnataka.
"Reports indicate some from our state are among the injured. Officials are working to ensure their safe return, and the government is making every effort for their well-being. I urge all Kannadigas at the Kumbh Mela to stay cautious and safe," he added.
Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed grief over the loss of lives during stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj and appealed to devotees to be patient and follow instructions of the local administration.

"All devotees are requested to maintain patience and follow the instructions of the local administration. Take holy bath at the ghat of Maa Ganga which is nearest to you in the mela," he said.
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren offered his condolences to pilgrims who lost their family members in the stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj.
Soren said he is saddened to hear the news of the tragic stampede at Maha Kumbh. He hoped that the Union government would investigate the incident thoroughly and take necessary steps to prevent such accidents in the future.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday said his government is ready to extend the necessary help.
Reddy said the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government should provide appropriate treatment for the injured and also help the families of those who lost their lives in the tragedy, according to an official release.
