JP Nadda named Leader of House in Rajya Sabha

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge continues as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

News Arena Network - New Delhi - UPDATED: June 24, 2024, 06:41 PM - 2 min read

Union Minister JP Nadda with BJP MPs at the Parliament House complex on the first day of the first session of the 18th Lok Sabha, in New Delhi, Monday, June 24, 2024.

BJP president and Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has been appointed as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, succeeding Union Minister Piyush Goyal.

Goyal, who won from the Mumbai North constituency in the Lok Sabha elections, took oath on June 24 as a member of the Lower House.

After he was sworn in, there was speculation that Nadda would step down from his role as BJP National President, a position he took over from current Union Home Minister Amit Shah in 2020.

However, it now appears that Mr. Nadda will remain the BJP's top organizational leader.

Party rules state that a National President is elected only after organizational elections are completed in 50 percent of all states, a process expected to continue for about six months.

Therefore, the new president may be elected in December or January.

Meanwhile, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge continues as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

In addition to Nadda, 11 other members of the Upper House of Parliament are part of the Union Council of Ministers.

Congratulating Nadda, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh emphasised the importance of accommodating the opposition's views.

"Greetings to J P Nadda ji on his being nominated as the Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha. As Venkaiah Naidu garu might have said -- if the Leader of the House can accommodate, the Opposition can cooperate," he posted on X.

About JP Nadda:

JP Nadda holds a degree in law and began his political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, the BJP's ideological mentor.

In 1991, he became the leader of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the party's youth wing.

Nadda was first elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012 from Himachal Pradesh and was made a member of the BJP's parliamentary board in 2014 when Amit Shah became the party's President.

He also served as an MLA in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, winning the Bilaspur seat three times (1993, 1998, and 2007) and serving as Health Minister from 1998 to 2003.

In April this year, he was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat.
