India and Russia held high-level Army-to-Army talks in New Delhi as the two countries moved to deepen defence cooperation and strengthen their long-standing strategic partnership amid evolving regional and global security challenges.

The discussions took place during the 5th Sub Working Group (Land) meeting under the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC) on Military and Military Technical Cooperation framework.

In a post on X, the Indian Army said the meeting marked another significant milestone in enhancing ties between the Indian Army and the Russian Land Forces.

“Both sides held productive deliberations aimed at enhancing mutual learning, operational synergy and bilateral military capabilities, further reinforcing the
longstanding India-Russia defence partnership,” the Army said.

The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in military training, operational coordination and defence engagement mechanisms. The Russian delegation also visited the Shatrujeet Brigade, where both sides explored additional avenues of defence cooperation.

The latest engagement comes amid continued efforts by New Delhi and Moscow to strengthen what both countries describe as a “privileged strategic partnership”, particularly in the defence and energy sectors.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during his visit to India earlier this month, had said the two countries held detailed discussions on defence manufacturing, space cooperation and fertiliser supplies. Lavrov said the roadmap for bilateral cooperation included joint production of weapons and efforts to improve mechanisms insulating economic ties from “unfriendly pressure from third countries”.

Energy security and defence cooperation have remained key pillars of India-Russia ties despite shifting geopolitical equations and growing global tensions.

The engagement also assumes significance ahead of the BRICS Summit to be hosted by India later this year. The Kremlin has confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin will attend the summit in New Delhi in September under India’s BRICS chairmanship.

Putin had last visited India in December 2025 for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to expanding cooperation across defence, trade, energy and technology sectors.
