Govt plans 1.7 pc price hike for essential medicines.

Government-controlled medicines for serious ailments like cancer, diabetes, heart issues, and other essential antibiotics are expected to become costlier by 1.7 per cent, according to sources.

The information, shared by government officials with Business Today, highlights an imminent rise in the prices of these critical medications.

The increase is likely to impact a broad range of patients who depend on these regulated medicines for treatment. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), which regulates drug prices in India, sets a ceiling price for these medicines under the Drug (Prices Control) Order (DPCO), 2013.

All pharmaceutical manufacturers and marketers must adhere to the ceiling price, including applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST).

The price hike, though a concern for patients, is seen as necessary by some in the pharmaceutical industry.

Rajiv Singhal, General Secretary of the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), commented that the increase could provide some relief to pharmaceutical companies struggling with rising raw material costs and production expenses.

He noted that it might take two to three months for the revised prices to reflect in the market due to the existing stock of saleable medicines.

A recent report by a Parliamentary Standing Committee on Chemicals and Fertilisers revealed multiple violations by pharmaceutical firms regarding pricing regulations. The NPPA found 307 instances of non-compliance by companies exceeding the permissible price limits.

Despite the efforts to regulate prices, there have been consistent breaches, raising questions about the effectiveness of current monitoring mechanisms.

Earlier this month, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers highlighted that the ceiling prices of medicines listed in the National List of Essential Medicines, 2022, resulted in an estimated annual saving of ₹3,788 crore for patients.

This measure was aimed at making healthcare more affordable and ensuring that essential medicines remain accessible to the public.
