The Election Commission (EC) has granted permission to the Delhi Municipal Corporation to conduct elections for the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor on April 26. This decision comes in the midst of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections and the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) across the country.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Electoral Officer of NCT of Delhi, the EC stated that it has no objection, from the MCC perspective, to the proposal for conducting the mayoral elections. This move ensures that the electoral process for these crucial positions can proceed smoothly within the framework of the MCC.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has nominated Mahesh Khichi for the post of Mayor and Ravinder Bhardwaj for Deputy Mayor, while the BJP has put forward Kishan Lal as its candidate. Notably, the Congress party has announced its support for the AAP candidate in these elections.

Last year, AAP candidates Shelly Oberoi and Aaley Muhammad Iqbal were re-elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi respectively. This followed the withdrawal of nominations by BJP candidates, resulting in the uncontested election of the AAP nominees to these positions.

The decision by the EC to permit the MCD to proceed with the mayoral elections underscores the importance of democratic processes at the local level. Despite the ongoing national elections, the EC's approval ensures that local governance structures can function effectively and democratically.

The upcoming mayoral elections hold significance for the political landscape of Delhi, with multiple parties vying for these key positions. The outcome of these elections will shape the direction of municipal governance and decision-making in the national capital.

As the electoral process unfolds on April 26, all eyes will be on the candidates and their campaigns as they seek to secure victory in the contest for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Delhi.
