On Friday morning, the Air Quality Index (AQI) across Delhi and its National Capital Region (NCR) displayed a range of air quality levels, with multiple areas classified under the 'Poor' category, while stricter measures under Stage 2 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) were already in effect.

According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the overall AQI in Delhi was recorded at 292 at 8 am.

Specific areas in the capital reported concerning pollution levels. In south-west Delhi’s RK Puram, the AQI reached 316, while Patparganj recorded a slightly higher 323. Several locations fell into the 'Very Poor' category, including Bawana with an AQI of 347, Burari at 334, Ashok Vihar at 320, and Jahangirpuri at 348.

The ITO area also registered an AQI of 316, while the India Gate zone was comparatively better at 254, still within the 'Poor' range. Near AIIMS, the AQI was measured at 295. However, pollution levels were particularly alarming around Akshardham Temple and Anand Vihar, both recording an AQI of 403, placing them in the 'Severe' category. In contrast, Dhaula Kuan reported an AQI of 257, remaining in the 'Poor' range.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) had previously enforced Stage 2 of GRAP across the NCR with immediate effect to address the deteriorating air quality. The CAQM’s order stated, “Actions under Stage I and II of the extant GRAP shall be implemented, monitored, and reviewed in earnest by all concerned agencies in the entire NCR to ensure that AQI levels do not slip further. All implementing agencies shall maintain a strict vigil and intensify measures to the extent specified in the GRAP schedule. Citizens may be requested to strictly adhere to the citizen charter under GRAP Stage I & II.”

Additionally, the CAQM directed all relevant agencies to adhere to the actions and timelines outlined in its comprehensive policy to combat air pollution in the NCR, with a particular emphasis on dust mitigation measures.

As part of GRAP Stage 2, the CAQM mandated daily mechanical or vacuum sweeping and water sprinkling on designated roads to reduce dust. The Commission also called for increased parking fees, enhanced frequency of bus and metro services, and stringent regulation of diesel generator (DG) sets across all sectors to conserve power and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply in the region.
