Delhi demolition clashes: Police arrest 3 more for stone-pelting

Delhi Police have arrested three more people in connection with the stone-pelting case that was filed after clashes erupted during an anti-encroachment drive by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near a mosque close to the Turkman Gate.


The total arrests for violence have now reached 16, said police on Friday, adding that the arrested individuals are identified as Mohd. Naved, Mohd. Faiz and Mohd. Ubaidullah.


Meanwhile, the Tis Hazari court on Friday remanded eight accused to judicial custody till January 21. The accused persons were produced before the court following fresh arrests in the Turkman Gate stone-pelting case. 


Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Sayesha Chaddha remanded the accused, namely Imran Farrukh, Imran Sultan, Mohd Affan, Amir Hamza, Mohd. Ubaid Ullah, Shahnawaz, Mohd. Athar, Mohd. Adil in judicial custody till January 21.


On Thursday, the Delhi police also confirmed that 30 individuals have been identified for their alleged involvement in the violence after scrutiny of CCTV footage and viral videos circulating on social media.

Police teams have launched raids at multiple locations to take the remaining suspects into custody, they said, while body-cam videos by policemen on duty that day are also being viewed for additional information on miscreants who attempted rioting.


The Delhi Police said it will also issue summons to Samajwadi Party MP, Mohibbullah Nadvi, to join the investigation. Nadvi was present at the site shortly before the violence broke out, police said, despite being requested by senior officers to vacate the premises. He was also present there at the time of the incident, they added.


The demolition drive was conducted near Turkman Gate, close to Ramlila Maidan, on January 7 following directions from the Delhi High Court. Police said the operation was carried out after several coordination meetings with members of the Aman Committee and local stakeholders to maintain peace.
