Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman introduced the Corporate Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha on Monday, marking a significant legislative move as the Budget session resumed. Subsequently, the House moved a motion to refer the bill to a Joint Parliamentary Committee to scrutinise it in greater detail. The legislation, if passed, is intended to further perfect the Limited Liability Partnership Act, 2008, and the Companies Act, 2013, in the government's continuous quest to modernise company law.

The timing of the legislation is noteworthy, given the reconvening of Parliament after a short adjournment to accommodate the Ugadi and Eid festivals. To make up for the time lost during these holidays, the House is scheduled to sit on both March 28 and 29. Beyond the corporate amendments, the Finance Minister is also expected to move the Finance Bill, 2026, which contains the central government’s key financial proposals for the 2026-27 fiscal year.

The proceedings of the day also included a number of administrative tasks, as a number of ministers, including Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Jayant Chaudhary, and Sukanta Majumdar, laid their respective papers on the table of the House. In addition, Harsh Malhotra, the Minister of State for Corporate Affairs, was scheduled to brief the House regarding the government’s progress with respect to the recommendations made by the Committee on Demands for Grants for the 2024-25 period.
