Congress president and Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah address Parliament over the recent student protest crackdown and allegations regarding "missing funds."
Speaking to reporters, Kharge said both leaders should make statements in the House and clarify the government's position on the issues.
"We want the Prime Minister and the Home Minister to come to the House and present their views. There is also the issue of the missing funds. What is their position on it?" he said.
Targeting the Centre over the July 20 student protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, Kharge alleged that excessive force had been used against demonstrators.
"Students were beaten, pellet guns were used, tear gas was fired, and every possible measure was taken against them. Why did this happen? Both the Prime Minister and the Home Minister should take responsibility and make statements in Parliament," he said.
Kharge also accused the Prime Minister of avoiding Parliament, claiming it undermined democratic accountability.
"The Prime Minister is not willing to come to the House. Instead of expressing his views elsewhere, he should come to Parliament or hold a press conference and answer the nation," he said.
Earlier in the day, Kharge reiterated his demands in a post on X, calling on the Home Minister to explain the alleged use of force against student protesters and asking the Prime Minister to respond to allegations concerning donations made to the Shri Ram Mandir.
The Opposition has intensified its attack on the government over the police action during the July 20 protest march led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), alleging that students were subjected to lathi-charge and pellet gun firing.
The government has maintained that action was taken to restore law and order, while the Supreme Court is currently hearing petitions related to the protests and allegations of police excesses.
