Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Saturday urged students to uphold constitutional values, ethical conduct and integrity while navigating the challenges of a rapidly evolving digital era, saying a degree marks only the beginning of greater responsibility towards society and the nation.

Addressing the 11th convocation ceremony of the Central University of Punjab through a virtual medium, the Chief Justice emphasised the importance of humility, compassion and human values in personal and professional life.

He encouraged graduating students to remain kind, empathetic and socially responsible, stressing that education should not only build careers but also shape responsible citizens committed to inclusive growth.

While acknowledging the opportunities created by digital advancement, CJI Kant cautioned against emerging ethical and behavioural challenges in the digital space, urging students to stay grounded and vigilant in their use of technology.

He advised students to avoid shortcuts and instead focus on hard work, continuous learning and innovation, noting that the future belongs to those who combine knowledge with ethical responsibility.

During the ceremony, the Chief Justice also virtually inaugurated the university library building, constructed over a built-up area of 31,410 square feet at an estimated cost of Rs 14.40 crore, aimed at strengthening academic and research infrastructure at the institution.

IIT Ropar Director Rajeev Ahuja, who also addressed the convocation, lauded the steady academic progress of the Central University of Punjab. He appreciated its growing research culture and encouraged students to pursue innovation, research and lifelong learning.

Ahuja said young graduates must contribute actively towards nation-building and the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by focusing on creativity, problem-solving and teamwork.

The university conferred 981 postgraduate degrees and 92 PhD degrees on students from across India and abroad during the ceremony. A total of 44 meritorious students were also awarded gold medals for outstanding academic performance.

Women students accounted for 52.1 per cent of postgraduate degree recipients and 61.36 per cent of gold medal winners, reflecting strong participation and achievement by female scholars.
