In a subtle jab at Maldives President Mohamad Muizzu, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has remarked that significant aid packages aren't typically extended by "big bullies" to distressed neighbouring nations.

Responding to a question during the promotion of his book 'Why Bharat Matters', Jaishankar asserted that India's actions speak louder than words.

He highlighted the substantial financial assistance provided to neighbouring countries during times of need, citing the $4.5 billion in aid offered during various crises.

"Large nations with hegemonic intentions don't behave in this manner," Jaishankar stated, implicitly referencing recent criticisms from Maldivian President Mohamad Muizzu, who previously warned against "bullying" by larger powers.

The minister further elaborated on India's commitment to regional connectivity and economic cooperation.

He highlighted the development of power grids, road networks, and railway connectivity projects undertaken in collaboration with neighbours like Bangladesh and Nepal.

He also emphasised the increased trade and investment partnerships with nations like Sri Lanka and, to an extent, the Maldives.

"While our relationship with most countries is strong, challenges do exist," Jaishankar acknowledged, alluding to the ongoing diplomatic row with the Maldives.

He expressed hope for a future resolution, stating, "In diplomacy, we never lose sight of hope and the possibilities that the future holds."

The minister's comments come against the backdrop of strained relations between India and Maldives, which escalated in January following the suspension of three Maldivian ministers for derogatory remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

These remarks were made subsequent to Modi's promotion of Lakshadweep as a tourist destination.

Jaishankar also highlighted the positive transformations in India's relationships with its neighbours, such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

He said that the development of infrastructure, trade, and investment ties, as well as enhanced connectivity, are indicative of strengthening regional cooperation.

Touching upon recent developments, Jaishankar mentioned Maldives' decision to withdraw Indian military personnel, signalling a step towards reducing foreign military presence on the island.

This move aligns with President Muizzu's vision to minimise such presence and underscores his pro-China stance.
