FM Sitharaman will surpass the records set by her predecessors such as Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who had each presented five budgets consecutively.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2026-27 in the Lok Sabha on Sunday, February 1. After the Budget speech in the Lower House, the documents will be tabled in the Rajya Sabha.

This will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive Budget presentation since she assumed office in 2019, making it a significant milestone in India’s parliamentary history. It will also be the third Budget of the Narendra Modi-led government in its third term. Only former Prime Minister Morarji Desai has presented more Budgets, ten in total, though not consecutively.

Following the Budget presentation, the documents will be made available on the official website and mobile application after the Finance Minister concludes her speech. Sitharaman is also scheduled to interact with around 30 college students from different regions of the country later in the day.

Ahead of the Budget, the Finance Minister conducted extensive pre-Budget consultations with a wide range of stakeholders, including economists, trade unions, representatives from industry, MSMEs, trade and services, the financial sector, capital markets, as well as the education and health sectors.

Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan also held detailed consultations on issues related to agriculture and rural development, submitting a consolidated set of suggestions to the Finance Minister. Inputs were additionally sought from citizens, including youth, through various platforms during the Budget preparation process.

The formal Budget process was preceded by the traditional Halwa ceremony, which marks the start of the budget “lock-in” period. During this phase, officials involved in preparing the Budget remain confined to the North Block under strict security until the Budget is presented in Parliament.
