Rajan Singh files nomination amid allegations of violence.

In the lead-up to the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections, an unexpected controversy has erupted surrounding the Aam Janata Party (AJP) candidate, Rajan Singh, from the Kalkaji constituency.

Rajan Singh, a transgender individual, has made serious allegations of harassment against members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The allegations have drawn considerable attention, as the candidate claims that each time they attempted to submit their nomination papers, AAP members allegedly tore them up.

Rajan Singh's attempts to file their nomination were thwarted repeatedly, with claims of harassment and physical obstruction. In an interview, they stated that their nomination papers had been forcibly torn up by AAP supporters whenever they tried to submit them.

Singh expressed frustration over the lack of action from the Delhi Police, who, according to the candidate, refused to file a formal complaint in response to these incidents. However, the situation has escalated, leading to intervention from the Delhi High Court.

The Delhi High Court, upon hearing the allegations, has now instructed the Delhi Police to file a report within 24 hours of the complaint being made. Singh stated that the police had initially been reluctant to take any action, leaving them feeling helpless and unsupported.

"AAP leaders are constantly harassing me and even the Delhi Police is not registering my complaint," Singh told the media, adding that the intervention of the Delhi High Court was a crucial turning point.

The AJP candidate further emphasised that they are not only running for office but are also representing the transgender community. Singh described the situation as discriminatory, claiming that as a member of this community, they were being targeted in a way that others were not.

The emotional toll of these experiences was apparent as Singh spoke about how their papers were torn, adding that the harassment they faced was deeply rooted in prejudice.

Despite these challenges, Rajan Singh successfully filed their nomination for the Kalkaji constituency, much to the frustration of those allegedly obstructing their candidacy.

The case has become a flashpoint for the treatment of transgender individuals in Indian politics, and the larger issue of equal representation for the LGBTQ+ community in political spaces.

The Delhi High Court has taken the matter seriously and issued a notice to the Delhi Police on January 22, seeking a response to Singh's plea. The case is set to be heard again on January 27, with the police expected to respond to the accusations of harassment and the need for police protection for Singh.

The petition filed by Singh claims that unknown individuals, allegedly aligned with a rival political party, threatened their life and tore up their electoral roll certificate. Singh has expressed that, given the threats, police protection is urgently required for their safety during this time.

The political landscape in Kalkaji is further complicated by the presence of prominent candidates from other major parties. AAP has fielded its candidate Atishi, who currently serves as Delhi's Education Minister and is a well-known figure in the city's political scene.

In addition to Singh from AJP, Atishi is facing competition from BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress' Alka Lamba, making Kalkaji one of the most closely watched constituencies in the 2025 Delhi elections.

The upcoming election, set for February 5, promises to be a critical moment for all the candidates, with the vote count scheduled for February 8.
