Seven people were killed and eight others injured after a landslide struck Mumbai’s Ghatkopar area early Wednesday following heavy rainfall, officials said. A portion of a hillside collapsed onto two to three houses in Gaushiya Chawl in Ashok Nagar, Chirag Nagar, trapping residents under debris.

 

The landslide was reported at around 3:48 am, with rescue teams rushing to the site after receiving information about the collapse. The deceased included three children aged between two and 14 years. The victims were taken to Rajawadi Hospital, where they were declared dead.

 

Three injured people were admitted to Rajawadi Hospital, while four others were taken to Bhabha Hospital in Kurla. Their condition was reported to be stable.

 

Rescue operations by the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), ambulance services and civic authorities continued through the day. Officials said the narrow route leading to the affected area was a major challenge, as it was so restricted that only one person could pass through at a time, making it difficult to bring in heavy rescue equipment.

Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde visited the site and met affected families. The civic administration announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased person and ₹50,000 towards the medical treatment of each injured person.

 

The incident occurred amid heavy monsoon rain in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Civic authorities said residents in vulnerable locations had previously been warned about the risk of landslides and rockfalls and advised to relocate to safer areas.

 

The administration has directed agencies involved in the rescue operation to intensify their efforts and maintain coordination as the search continues.
