5.4-magnitude earthquake shakes Andaman and Nicobar Islands

An earthquake shook the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday afternoon. Sources revealed that the magnitude was 5.4.

A powerful earthquake struck India's Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Sunday, registering a magnitude of 5.4 on the Richter scale, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 12:06 pm IST, with the epicenter located 90 km from the islands, the NCS stated in a post on X.


As of now, no casualties or damage to property have been reported.


In related reports, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) assessed the quake at a higher magnitude of 6.07 on the Richter scale. Meanwhile, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the earthquake that hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 5.5 on the Richter scale.


The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are situated in one of the world's most seismically active regions and are classified under Zone V, the highest seismic zone in India. According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, Zone V encompasses the entirety of northeastern India, parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, parts of North Bihar, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
