Independence Day To See 1037 Medals Awarded for Exceptional Service.

The Union Home Ministry has announced that 1,037 personnel from various services will be honoured with gallantry and service medals on Independence Day. This includes police officers, fire service members, home guards, civil defence personnel, and correctional services staff.

The President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) and the Medal for Gallantry (GM) are among the highest honours given for exceptional bravery. The PMG is awarded for rare acts of conspicuous gallantry, while the GM is given for conspicuous gallantry.

These medals recognize individuals who have shown remarkable courage in saving lives, preventing crime, or arresting criminals, often at great personal risk.

Head Constable Chaduvu Yadaiah of Telangana Police is among those receiving the PMG. His heroism during a robbery in July 2022 earned him this prestigious award.

Despite being brutally attacked with a knife during the arrest of chain-snatchers and arms dealers, Yadaiah’s perseverance led to the successful apprehension of the criminals. He was severely injured but managed to hold on until backup arrived, resulting in the criminals' capture.

The GM will be awarded to 213 personnel, with 208 of these going to police officers. Notably, the Jammu and Kashmir Police will receive 31, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra will each receive 17, and Chhattisgarh will receive 15.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) will get 52 medals, while the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will receive 14 and 10 medals, respectively. The Border Security Force (BSF) will receive 6 medals.

In addition to police personnel, Delhi and Jharkhand Fire Service members will receive 3 and 1 GM medals, respectively, while Uttar Pradesh Home Guard and Civil Defence personnel will receive 1 GM.

The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) are awarded for outstanding records of service and valuable contributions characterized by resourcefulness and dedication.

This year, 94 PSMs will be awarded—75 to Police Service, 8 each to Fire Service and Civil Defence/Home Guard Service, and 3 to Correctional Service. Additionally, 729 MSMs will be presented, with 624 going to Police Service, 47 to Fire Service, 47 to Civil Defence and Home Guard Service, and 11 to Correctional Service.

This recognition highlights the dedication and bravery of those who serve with exceptional commitment and courage.
