UK PM Keir Starmer Stresses Ceasefire In Israel Gaza War.

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, has called for an urgent ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. In discussions with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Starmer emphasised the importance of a two-state solution and the need for immediate humanitarian aid to reach civilians in Gaza.

The conflict has already claimed over 38,000 lives, predominantly women and children, and has resulted in more than 87,000 injuries. Starmer’s recent phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu highlighted the urgent need for a ceasefire and the return of hostages.

He also stressed the necessity of increasing the volume of humanitarian aid. This stance marks a significant shift from his previous position when, as opposition leader, he faced criticism for not calling for a ceasefire and aligning with the Conservative Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s approach. The change in stance came after intense public pressure, leading Starmer to call for a ceasefire in February.

Additionally, Starmer has faced accusations of denying party tickets to pro-Palestinian members of Labour, including former party leader Jeremy Corbyn. Despite these accusations, at least five pro-Palestinian candidates, including Corbyn, won the elections as independents.

Starmer's previous comments on an LBC podcast, where he stated that Israel "has the right" to cut off water and electricity supplies to Gaza, drew backlash. A Labour Party spokesperson later clarified that Starmer’s remarks were in response to a question about Israel’s right to defend itself.

The ongoing Israeli military offensive in Gaza has taken a severe toll on the Palestinian population, with significant casualties and destruction.

Starmer’s statements underscore the UK's commitment to ensuring that the conditions for a two-state solution are established, including financial support for the Palestinian Authority to operate effectively.

In his communication with Netanyahu, Starmer assured that the UK aims to maintain vital cooperation with Israel to deter malign threats. He also conveyed similar priorities in his conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, reaffirming the UK's commitment to a ceasefire and the long-term stability of the region.
