US president Donald Trump and Colombian President Petro Gustavo are engaged in a war of words over drug trafficking, No Kings protests, and ICE crackdowns, with both leaders exchanging hostile words.
Trump called Petro an elected drug dealer with popular support, whereas Petro has ordered US troops to defy the orders of Donald Trump due to his authoritarian leadership style in the country.
On Sunday last week, Trump threatened to freeze millions in aid to Colombia and brand its president a drug trafficker, which has smashed long-standing ties and could yet shake up the country’s 2026 presidential race.
However, despite all the rhetoric, Petro seems to be unfazed by the threats; the former guerrilla-turned politician has embraced the battle with Trump, using it as a factor to stir his voter base.
After relentless hostile rhetoric from Trump, the Colombian president on Monday recalled his ambassador to the US. The Ambassador strongly rejected Trump’s claims on the language being used against the Colombian president, saying “threats won’t work against Bogota.”

“President Trump doesn’t like us being out of his control,” he wrote on X Tuesday, while claiming the threat of a US invasion and stating “they want a coup against me.”
Over the weekend, Petro backed US demonstrations, posting ‘No to kings’ and sharing protest videos. US and Colombian relations since Trump took power have deteriorated due to an ongoing rift between the countries.
The two nations were once used by the ally in the fight against the drug cartel, yet the new leadership in Washington has lowered its ties with the nation, particularly on the drug cartel issue.
With Trump in office, the relations between Bogota and Washington are less likely to witness any improvements in the coming days. It is interesting to see how the developments will unfold in the coming days, as both leaders look to confront each other.
