The Taliban has announced that women in Afghanistan will face stoning to death for adultery, as reported by a recent article.

The Supreme Leader of the Taliban, Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, declared the resumption of publicly stoning women to death in a voice message aired on state TV last Saturday, as per the Telegraph.

In a video obtained by the Telegraph, Akhundzada stated that the women's rights advocated by the international community were contrary to the Taliban's interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.

"You claim it's a violation of women's rights when we stone them to death. However, we will soon enforce the punishment for adultery. We will publicly flog women. We will stone them to death in public," he remarked.

Akhundzada added, "The Taliban's work didn't conclude with the capture of Kabul; it has only just commenced."

Since the Taliban regained control in 2021, Afghan women have encountered numerous obstacles. Girls and women in the conflict-ridden nation lack access to education, employment, and public spaces.

Merely a month after their return to power, Taliban authorities prohibited girls from attending secondary school, subsequently shutting the doors of universities to them in December 2022 and severely restricting their involvement in the workforce.

A UN report described conditions for women and girls in Afghanistan as the "most severe globally," asserting that the Taliban government's policies, based on their strict interpretation of Islam, could amount to "gender apartheid."
