UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned from his post, months after economic turmoil dominated the country’s political landscape. While announcing his resignation, Starmer said he wanted to focus on other, more important things in life after leaving the country’s top job.
“Being the best husband I can be to my fantastic wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad,” he said, fighting back emotion. “And being the best dad I can be to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy,” he added as he concluded his final address to the nation.
However, he said he would do everything possible to ensure an orderly transition of power and would extend his full support to his successor. He said the incoming prime minister must know that he or she would be taking charge of a stronger Britain than what it was two years ago when he assumed office.
Starmer thanked his friends, family and colleagues who had stood by him for nearly six years, as well as the staff at No. 10 and the “extraordinary civil service”. He said he had informed King Charles earlier in the day of his decision to resign.
He has asked the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to set out a timetable, with nominations for the leadership opening on July 9 and the process to be completed by the summer recess.
However, he will continue to lead the country until the next parliamentary session in September, when the new leader is expected to take over.
