The search for India’s rally legend Hari Singh, popularly known as the ‘Gypsy King’, has been called off in the Maldives after eight days with no trace of him following a boating accident.

Hari Singh went missing after a high-speed boat capsized near Felidhoo island in Vaavu Atoll in the early hours of March 19. Despite an extensive multi-agency effort involving drones, light aircraft and coordinated sea searches, no clue to his whereabouts was found.

The search operation, which continued well beyond the standard 72-hour window, also sought to locate decorated sailor and former naval officer Commander Mahesh Ramachandran, who was among those involved in the incident.

Authorities from both India and the Maldives jointly carried out the operation, dividing responsibilities at sea. The Indian government had deployed a Dornier maritime surveillance aircraft and an advanced light helicopter to assist Maldivian forces.

Confirming the development, SPS Gharcha, president of the Chandigarh Motorsport Association and a close associate of Singh, said the operation yielded no results. “No headway, not even a single hint, the operation has been called off late last night. It’s strange, not even a single thing attached to Hari was found,” he said.

Back home in Chandigarh, Singh’s family has announced that a ‘bhog’ ceremony will be held in his memory on March 30 at a gurdwara in Sector 8.

Hari Singh was one of India’s most celebrated rally drivers, winning five titles in the Indian National Rally Championship during the 1990s. He also created history by clinching the inaugural Asia Zone Rally Championship, becoming one of the first Indian drivers to achieve international recognition.

Known for his fearless driving and technical precision, Singh continued to contribute to motorsport after retiring from active competition, serving as Head of Operations at JK Tyre Motorsport and as Chief Instructor for Mercedes-Benz India.

The accident occurred around 1.15 am local time when a high-performance speedboat carrying seven passengers overturned in choppy waters, leaving several struggling to escape.
