Russian forces showered a barrage of drones and missiles targeting nearly every district in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Friday morning, officials said.
According to Ukrainian emergency services, one person was killed, while at least 15 others were wounded in the attack and more than 40 people rescued from fires and destruction across the city.
Moscow, which launched a military campaign against Kyiv in 2022, has since intensified its attacks on the country’s infrastructure, especially targeting Ukrainian energy facilities and rail systems, as well as residential areas.
Kyiv, on its part, has also carried out large-scale attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure, causing power outages in several parts of the country.
Friday’s attack by Moscow, however, was aimed at targeting critical infrastructure in Kyiv, said Mykola Kalashnyk, head of Kyiv’s regional military administration.

Officials warned that electricity and water supplies in the country may be disrupted in the coming days.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of military administration, accused Russians of targeting residential buildings to cause maximum damage.
“There are a lot of damaged high-rise buildings throughout Kyiv, almost in every district,” he said.
The latest attack by Moscow comes in the wake of Ukraine’s western backers increasing pressure on Russia to end the war.
US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, said on Thursday in Canada, where he attended the G7 summit, that they had “run out of commodities that can still be sanctioned”.
However, Canada announced fresh sanctions on Wednesday against Russia’s drone and energy production, as well as infrastructure used to launch cyberattacks.
