India to Open New Embassy in Timor Leste Announces President Murmu.

India is set to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Southeast Asia by opening an embassy in Timor-Leste, a move announced by President Droupadi Murmu during her visit to the country. This new embassy aims to facilitate better consular services for the Indian community residing in Timor-Leste and enhance the communication and cooperation between the two governments.

President Murmu highlighted the significance of this step at a State Banquet hosted by Timor-Leste President Jose Ramos-Horta at Palacio Nobre De Lohane.

She emphasised that establishing an embassy would streamline services for Indians living in Timor-Leste and improve diplomatic ties between the two nations. This initiative is seen as a crucial part of India’s broader strategy to deepen its engagement with Southeast Asia.

The President also underscored the importance of enhancing the bilateral relationship between India and Timor-Leste. She referred to the ‘Delhi – Dili’ connection, emphasising that India remains committed to supporting Timor-Leste in its journey towards development.

Murmu noted that the friendship between the two nations is rooted in shared values of pluralism and sovereignty, which have guided their relationship over the years.

Timor-Leste, a young nation that gained independence in 2002, shares several similarities with India, especially in terms of the challenges it faces. President Murmu acknowledged these commonalities and expressed India’s readiness to partner with Timor-Leste as it continues to carve out its own path to progress. She lauded Timor-Leste as one of the most vibrant democracies in Southeast Asia, a testament to the resilience and determination of its people.

Murmu also reflected on the historical ties between India and Timor-Leste, reminding the audience that India was among the first countries to recognize Timor-Leste's independence.

Over the past 22 years, the young nation has emerged as a beacon of democracy and pluralism in the region. India's early establishment of political ties with Timor-Leste is a reflection of the mutual respect and shared values between the two countries.

During her address, President Murmu expressed her gratitude to President Jose Ramos-Horta for his warm reception and the candid discussions they had. She was particularly honoured by the conferral of the Grand Collar of the Order of Timor-Leste, the highest civilian award in the country. This gesture, she noted, symbolises the deep friendship and goodwill that Timor-Leste holds towards India.

President Murmu reiterated India's commitment to advancing its partnership with Timor-Leste. She expressed a strong desire to continue building on the solid foundation of trust and cooperation that exists between the two nations.

The opening of the new embassy in Timor-Leste marks a significant step in this direction, reinforcing India's dedication to fostering strong relationships with both the government and the people of Timor-Leste.
