Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir has accused India of escalating tensions in the region.

After the back-to-back statements from the Indian army chief and defence minister Rajnath Singh, warning Pakistan of an unprecedented response if the two sides clash again.

Pakistan’s military has responded with an inflammatory tone, saying the provocative statements from the Indian leadership would lead to "cataclysmic devastation". The statement came a day after General Upendra Dwivedi warned Islamabad that Indian forces would not show any restraint in case the two sides squared up once again.

He said that Pakistan must stop "supporting" terrorism if it wants to retain its place on the world map. Before him, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said any misadventure by the Pakistani side in the Sir Creek sector would be met with a “strong and decisive” response that could “change both history and geography.”

Sir Creek is a disputed 96-km-long tidal estuary between India’s Gujarat and Pakistan’s Sindh region. The Pakistan army has reacted strongly to the statements of the Indian army chief and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Islamabad has said the statements given by the Indian officials are “inflammatory in nature”.

"In the face of highly provocative statements ... we caution that a future conflict might lead to cataclysmic devastation. In case a fresh round of hostilities is triggered, Pakistan shall not hold back. We shall resolutely respond, without any qualms or restraint," the statement added.

The presser said Pakistan had the capability and resolve to take the fight to every nook and corner of the enemy’s territory, noting the conflict could be devastating for both nations.

The signalling has once again brought two nations into confrontational mode, which has so far been limited to the diplomatically fuelled war of words. In response to the Army Chief’s statement, the Pakistani military has threatened to launch “missile strikes on India in case a war breaks out”.
