The elevation of the younger Khamenei — a hardliner with deep-rooted alliances within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — places him at the pinnacle of Iran’s theocratic structure.

Iran’s Assembly of Experts has officially named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s third Supreme Leader.

In a move that formalises a long-suspected hereditary shift, Iran’s Assembly of Experts has officially named Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s third Supreme Leader. The announcement, released shortly after midnight Tehran time on Sunday, confirms that the 56-year-old mid-ranking cleric will succeed his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed during the joint US-Israeli strikes that ignited the current regional war on February 28.

The elevation of the younger Khamenei — a hardliner with deep-rooted alliances within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — places him at the pinnacle of Iran’s theocratic structure. While the regime’s founding ideology traditionally rejects the concept of hereditary rule, Mojtaba’s control over his father’s influential office and his backing by the military elite proved decisive. In their statement, the Assembly noted the appointment followed a "decisive vote," while senior clerics hinted that Mojtaba was chosen specifically because he is "hated by the enemy."

The news has already drawn a sharp, combative response from Washington. In an interview on Sunday, US President Donald Trump dismissed the new leader as a "lightweight" and warned that any Iranian successor would need American approval to survive. "If he doesn’t get approval from us, he’s not going to last long," Trump remarked, suggesting that Washington intends to have a direct say in Iran's future governance. Meanwhile, Israel has reiterated its stance that any successor to the late Ayatollah will be considered a potential military target.

Mojtaba Khamenei was born in the city of Mashhad in 1969. He has spent much of his adult life working covertly within the Iranian establishment. While Khamenei has never been formally appointed to a post by any government, he has been credited with creating many hardline leaders from the Iranian regime. During Iran's widespread riots in 2022, Khamenei was one of the main targets of public outrage. Now that Khamenei is thrust into the public eye during this 12-day war between two countries, he inherits not just the command of Iran's military, but also a nation that is dealing with internal defiance and is about to enter into a military battle with some of the strongest militaries in the world.
