Malaysia Seeks BRICS Membership PM Anwar Confirms The Request Made to Russia.

Malaysia has formally applied to join the BRICS group, as confirmed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The application has been submitted to Russia, which currently chairs the organisation. This move underscores Malaysia's ambition to be part of the influential economic bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

The announcement came after discussions between Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Lavrov's visit to Malaysia was part of a two-day working trip aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations. The Prime Minister's Office released a statement highlighting the key points of their conversation, with Malaysia's BRICS membership bid being a central focus.

Anwar emphasised the significance of Malaysia's potential membership in BRICS, noting that it could bring substantial benefits to both Malaysia and the existing member countries.

He stated, "Our discussions primarily centred on Malaysia’s recent application for membership in the BRICS alliance, which Russia currently chairs. This potential membership holds substantial promise for both nations and underscores our commitment to fostering robust international collaboration."

In addition to discussing BRICS, Anwar and Lavrov covered various aspects of bilateral cooperation. They explored opportunities in investment and trade, science and technology, agriculture, defence and military, education, and tourism and culture. Both leaders expressed optimism about the future of Malaysia-Russia relations and the potential for expanded cooperation in these fields.

Lavrov welcomed Malaysia's interest in joining BRICS and assured Anwar that Russia would support Malaysia's application. He expressed confidence that Malaysia's inclusion in BRICS would strengthen the organisation's global influence and enhance cooperation among member countries.

BRICS, originally an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was established to create a platform for developing countries to collaborate on economic, political, and cultural matters.

South Africa joined the group in 2010, adding a significant presence from the African continent. BRICS aims to promote peace, security, and development in member countries and beyond.

Malaysia's application to join BRICS reflects its strategic vision for economic growth and international collaboration. By aligning itself with BRICS, Malaysia hopes to enhance its global standing and foster closer ties with some of the world's largest emerging economies. This move is seen as part of Malaysia's broader effort to diversify its international partnerships and reduce its dependence on traditional Western allies.

The application process for BRICS membership involves several stages, including a thorough review by existing member countries. Malaysia will need to demonstrate its commitment to the principles and objectives of BRICS and showcase its potential contributions to the group. If accepted, Malaysia would become the sixth member of BRICS, further expanding the organisation's reach and influence.

As Malaysia awaits the outcome of its application, the government remains focused on strengthening its domestic economy and pursuing opportunities for international collaboration.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration is committed to leveraging Malaysia's strategic position in Southeast Asia to build new partnerships and enhance the country's global competitiveness.

The potential inclusion of Malaysia in BRICS marks a significant milestone in the country's foreign policy and economic strategy. It reflects Malaysia's ambition to play a more active role on the global stage and contribute to the development of a more inclusive and equitable international order.
