French President Emmanuel Macron has reinstated Sebastien Lecornu as Prime Minister of the country, four days after accepting his resignation. Macron made the decision amid an intensifying political crisis over France’s rising external debt.
Lecornu resigned on Monday, less than a month after first assuming office. According to a statement from the French presidential palace on Friday, he will now be responsible for assembling a new cabinet.
Shortly after Macron announced his name, Lecornu, in a post on X, wrote, “I accept – out of duty – the mission entrusted to me by the President of the Republic to do everything possible to provide France with a budget by the end of the year and to address the daily life issues of our fellow citizens.”
He added, “We must put an end to the ongoing political crisis that affects the French people, and the instability would be harmful to France’s image and its interests.”

Elected just a month ago, Lecornu faced mounting pressure in recent weeks as he struggled to push a budget through a deeply divided French parliament. He resigned from the post following backlash from both the right and left wings over his proposed choice of ministers.
The reinstatement has drawn a sharp reaction from French political circles. Jordan Bardella, president of the right-wing National Rally (RN) party, denounced the reappointment as “a cruel joke and a humiliation for the French people.”
Mathilde Panot of the left-wing La France Insoumise (LFI) accused Macron of clinging to power despite his deep unpopularity.
