Lecornu exit deepens crisis as Macron seeks replacement.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday began searching for an ideal candidate to be announced as the country’s next Prime Minister amid ongoing political uncertainties.

Outgoing Premier Sébastien Lecornu plunged the country deeper into a political crisis after his resignation.

The French Presidency late on Wednesday said Macron would name a fresh candidate within the next 48 hours, indicating the announcement is expected by Friday evening.

Lecornu, who resigned hours after joining the cabinet, said he expects a new candidate to be named either in early legislative elections or following Macron’s resignation.

Meanwhile, the French Parliament on Wednesday rejected the motion to impeach President Macron, who, despite internal turmoil, has represented the country effectively on international platforms and strengthened France’s role in emerging global diplomacy.

The presidency said, “The president will name a prime minister within 48 hours,” adding that a “path was possible” to agree on a budget by the end of the year.

However, as of Thursday, there was no indication of the identity of the new candidate.

Lecornu said he informed Macron that the possibilities for snap elections had receded since there was a majority in the lower house of Parliament who voted against impeachment and the dissolution of Parliament.

While former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe insisted that Macron should resign and call for snap elections, Lecornu has backed Macron and said the president should serve out his mandate until 2027.

“It is not the time to change the president,” Lecornu said, adding, “Let us not make the French believe that it is the president who votes on the budget.”
