The US President Donald Trump suggested on Wednesday that the conflict with Iran is nearing its conclusion, but he simultaneously maintained that the United States has not yet concluded its military operations, yet. Speaking to the media, the US President remarked that he viewed the situation as "very close to being over," even as Washington readies itself for a second round of diplomatic negotiations with Tehran in Islamabad.

The President's comments follow a period of intense regional instability, characterised by a US naval blockade in the Strait of Hormuz. This maritime enforcement, involving thousands of American personnel and a significant fleet of warships, was initiated after the collapse of previous peace talks. The blockade has already successfully intercepted and turned back numerous vessels attempting to reach Iranian ports.

In a characteristic display of mixed signalling, Trump followed his optimistic assessment of the war's end by asserting that the American military presence remained necessary. "If I pulled up stakes right now, it would take them 20 years to rebuild that country. And we’re not finished," he stated, adding that he believed the Iranian leadership was now desperate to secure a deal.

The tensions dramatically escalated on the February 28 after the United States and Israel carried out a number of strikes against Iran for developing nuclear weapons. As a result, the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and other top leaders were killed along with the destruction of important infrastructure in Iran. Iran's counter strikes against the interests of America in West Asia, according to Trump, were more forceful than expected.

In justification of the decision to start the direct confrontation, President Trump said that it had become inevitable if it was necessary to stop Iran from getting a bomb. Otherwise, according to the President, Iran's influence on the rest of the world would become undeniable.

Despite the existing ceasefire, there are doubts regarding its long-term prospects. According to Vice President JD Vance, although the President is trying to reach some "grand bargain," mistrust, unfortunately, is an unsurmountable obstacle. With the expiration date of the ceasefire coming in less than two months and continued blockade of Iran's international commerce, the upcoming negotiations in Pakistan seem to be crucial for the further destiny of the region.
