As per reports, a hacking group that supports the Palestinian cause and has alleged ties to Iranian intelligence has claimed that it has hacked the private email account of FBI Director Kash Patel. The hacking group named 'Handala' has posted a series of photographs online to prove the claim that it has indeed hacked the email account of the FBI Director, taunting the director by saying that his name has been added to the "list of successfully hacked victims."
An official from the Justice Department has since confirmed that Patel’s inbox was indeed compromised and noted that the leaked materials appear to be authentic. While the FBI and the hackers themselves have yet to offer a formal comment on the incident, cyber-security researchers in the West have long categorised Handala as a front for Iranian state-sponsored cyber-intelligence units. The group has been increasingly active of late, recently claiming a significant data breach at the Michigan-based medical firm Stryker earlier this month.
The targeted Gmail address matches one previously linked to Patel in older data breaches monitored by the dark web intelligence firm District 4 Labs. A preliminary look at the leaked cache indicates that it is a wide range of personal and professional communication over nearly a decade, between 2010 and 2019. The timing of this leak is also quite critical, given the geopolitical tensions that have been rising in the wake of recent military strikes.
This is a stark reminder of the cyber threats that even top security officials are subjected to in their own online world. In Patel's life, which has been defined by his work and his efforts to navigate the world of intelligence and security, this is a major blunder at a volatile time for the bureau.
