Experts believe Trump will push China to play a constructive role in ending the hostilities.

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have begun their bilateral talks in Beijing in what is being described as one of the most significant diplomatic events of 2026. The two leaders are expected to discuss a wide range of issues, including trade, economics, and major global geopolitical developments.

The meeting commenced on Thursday morning with the international community hoping for positive outcomes from this high-profile summit.

Global markets are also watching the proceedings closely, as several ongoing international issues are linked to the results of these talks.

Trump’s top priorities include pressing China to open its markets for American companies, increasing investment and job creation in the US, and purchasing more American agricultural products such as beef and soybeans.

Xi Jinping, on the other hand, is likely to seek concessions on Taiwan and tariffs, or at least ensure that Trump does not impose any fresh trade duties.

The ongoing US-Israel war with Iran is expected to feature prominently on the agenda, as China remains one of the largest consumers of Iranian oil and gas. Experts believe Trump will push China to play a constructive role in ending the hostilities.

In his opening remarks, Trump praised Xi as an exceptional host and said they share a “fantastic relationship”.

“We are going to have a fantastic future together. I have such respect for China, for the job you’ve done. You are a great leader,” he said.

Xi responded positively, saying, “I have always believed that the common interests between China and the US outweigh the differences.”

He added that the stability of Sino-US relations benefits the world and that he looks forward to exchanging views with Trump on major issues.

Trump will hold a bilateral meeting with Xi following a formal welcome at the Great Hall of the People. The two leaders will then visit the Temple of Heaven, a 600-year-old landmark in central Beijing.
