China has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening its strategic partnership with the Maldives following the resounding victory of the ruling People's National Congress (PNC) in the country's parliamentary elections.

With the PNC securing a super-majority of over 60 seats in parliament, Beijing has expressed complete respect for the choice made by the Maldivian people.

President Mohamed Muizzu's party's triumph signifies a notable endorsement of his foreign policy, characterized by a pro-China stance and a departure from the previous administration's "India First" approach.

In the aftermath of the elections, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokespersons congratulated the Maldives on the successful democratic process, highlighting China's readiness to collaborate closely with the nation.

The spokesperson reiterated China's commitment to nurturing traditional friendship, expanding bilateral exchanges and cooperation across various domains, and deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and the Maldives.

Beijing aims to accelerate the development of a shared future between the two countries to yield greater benefits for their respective populations.

While Muizzu's government has downplayed the elections' geopolitical implications, the landslide victory is perceived as a significant boost for China. Since assuming office last year, Muizzu's presidency has marked a shift towards closer ties with China, superseding the previously predominant pro-India stance.

The PNC's historic win, securing a staggering 68 seats in the People's Majlis, underscores a substantial mandate for Muizzu's administration.

In contrast, the pro-India Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) suffered a significant setback, plummeting from 65 seats in the 2019 elections to a mere 10 seats.

The outcome of the elections signals a notable realignment in the Maldives' foreign policy orientation, with implications extending beyond domestic governance.
