Ceasefire may end if no deal reached by Wednesday, says Trump

Speaking to the press aboard Air Force One during his return journey from Phoenix to Washington, the US President was notably non-committal about extending the truce.

US President Donald Trump on Friday issued a blunt warning that the current ceasefire with Iran could be terminated if a more comprehensive agreement to end hostilities is not finalised by Wednesday. The statement suggests that the Gulf could be teetering on the edge of a fresh military escalation just as hopes for a diplomatic solution were beginning to surface.

Speaking to the press aboard Air Force One during his return journey from Phoenix to Washington, the US President was notably non-committal about extending the truce. He made it clear that while the pause in fighting might end, the naval blockade on Iranian ports is going nowhere. "Maybe I will not renew it," he said, going on to say that should this deadlock go on, then "unfortunately" the United States "will have to restart its bombardment mission."

Indeed, this is but another stage in a series of unsuccessful negotiations, none more renowned than the talks held in Pakistan which failed to make headway. Despite extensive back-channel negotiations, there continues to be an irreconcilable divide between the two countries regarding issues such as the sanctions and maritime security.

At the heart of the friction is the Strait of Hormuz, a choke point for nearly a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas. Although Washington continues to state that the route is safe and operational, Tehran keeps arguing that it will close the passage unless Washington relents on its pressure campaign. The issue becomes even more complicated because of the US Navy’s blockade that has existed since mid-April. US sources have officially revealed that vessels trying to reach Iranian ports or leave them have been consistently blocked, and Iran considers this measure both illegitimate and aggressive.

The conflicting messages emanating from the White House continue to cause volatility within the international oil market. On one hand, Trump often talks about his optimism on the possibility of a possible agreement; however, on the other hand, the threats of military confrontation are causing serious uncertainties. If nothing happens by the time Wednesday passes, it is likely that the delicate peace will be shattered, leading to a volatile period that will impact the world not only within the borders of the Persian Gulf but beyond them as well.
