Police and locals assist rescue efforts after a bus accident in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.

Police in Ethiopia said nearly 31 people have died and many others are injured after a bus accident in the northern Amhara region, which has been affected by conflict.

The overcrowded bus was travelling from the Dessie area towards the capital Addis Ababa early on Monday morning when it went off the road and fell into a ravine, according to the Kombolcha Town Administration Police Division.

Officials said several passengers died because emergency help reached late. The area has poor infrastructure and limited ambulance services, so injured people had to be shifted in private and public vehicles.

The accident took place on a hilly road that is known to be dangerous and difficult to travel on. Authorities are still investigating the exact cause of the crash. In a similar incident in December 2024, a bus fell into a river in Ethiopia’s southern Sidama region, killing 66 people.
